ADELAIDE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW & RESTRICTED TRIAL

Obedience Critique for the German Shepherd Dog Club of SA Inc.

Saturday June 9th 2001
Judge: Keith Millington

Overview.

Thank you to the German Shepherd Dog Club of SA Inc. for inviting me to judge the obedience today. Heavy rain on previous days had ensured a fresh clean ring and the good drainage had cleared any excess water, leaving the grounds in excellent condition for the trial.

The Utility class was of a very high standard with two of the five dogs entered passing and one only failing a part of one exercise.

Open class was also of a very high standard in the individual exercises, but the group stays were disappointing with 2 dogs failing.

Novice class had the typical problems of new dogs that were easily distracted. While dogs were showing a good level of basic work, they were let down by losing attention and missing positions, due possibly to the activities, atmosphere and noise of the venue.

My stewards, John, Jeff and Josh kept the ring flowing smoothly, and I thank them for their assistance.

A very good working dog that displayed much enthusiasm for the work to the extent that the enthusiasm was causing minor deductions. The handler and dog work well as a team with obvious enjoyment from both sides.

Good basic work but was slow in some exercises and displayed a lack of confidence at times. The usual handler for this dog was unable to compete, but the handler of the day and dog did work well together.

A very keen working dog that was handled very well. This dog knocked off the bar in the Directed Jump exercise thus spoiling what would have been a very good performance.

Good basic work from the dog showing the dog has a good understanding of what he is required to do. However, the dog was not as brisk as he could be and consequently lost points.

In the individual exercises, this dog and handler performed excellently with only minor positional points being lost. There was a very high level of teamwork displayed and was by far the best individual performance of the day. I was very disappointed when the dog momentarily lifted and took its weight on its back feet during the Down Stay.

Another dog with a very high potential but fell to the distractions of the day. An enthusiastic worker that clearly knew her stuff and was handled well. Unfortunately, the distractions from activities outside the ring were affecting the precision of the work and were a major contributor to the dog misjudging the high jump in the Retrieve Dumbell over Obstacle exercise.

This dog qualified in the individual exercises at a minimum level as the work quality was not as brisk or enthusiastic as it could be. Having qualified in Utility earlier and not having the usual handler for competition may have contributed to this result, but it became a moot point when the dog lay down in the Sit Stay.

A Novice dog with a Novice handler that managed to get their act together. Nerves were a significant factor for this team but were under control by the end of the test. Bad habits from the handler were not helping, but a good recall salvaged a respectable score.

This team showed a good level of work for most of the trial but missed positions took a severe toll on their points. Fixing this problem will put this dog and handler in the winners’ circle on a regular basis.

The distractions of the day, the nerves of the handler, and an inattentive dog combined to spoil the day for this team. There were a several times when their true potential was shown, but when dog did not come on the recall, it was all over. Next trial will be much better because of the experience from this one.

This dog has typical problems of the novice dog. The basic underlying work is good, but the whole effect is spoiled by inattention and missed positions. Good potential for the future, provided the attention problem is fixed.

A very good working dog that was well handled. The team showed a high level of teamwork throughout the individual exercises until the Recall. A lapse in concentration by the dog resulted in two substantial deductions to produce a non-qualification in the last seconds of the last individual exercise, thereby snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!

Sunday June 10th 2001
Judge: Jan Brabham

It was a pleasure to judge the Obedience Trial at the 2001 German Shepherd Dog Club of SA Inc Restricted Trial. Unfortunately, I was not informed until the Monday night AFTER THE TRIAL that I was expected to give a written critique on every dog I judged. Had I known before the Trial commenced, I would have been only too happy to provide critiques, but trying to do this so long after the event would be unfair to exhibitors.

I felt the overall standard of the dogs in all classes was very good which is very encouraging for the breed and a reflection of the quality of instruction provided at our Breed Clubs. Despite the distractions, the dogs worked well and the overall improvement in the heeling exercises was quite marked from when I judged at this event in 1998. There were some extended and prolonged hand signals used by a few exhibitors - this must be carefully watched. The usual mishaps prevented several good dogs from gaining passes on the day but I was delighted to be able to award the Excellent grading to three dogs – one in each of the Utility, Open and Novice classes. These dogs performed at a particularly high level and it was pleasing to watch handler and dog work so well as a team in each case. Congratulations to the following Exhibitors and their dogs on gaining Excellent medallions:-
