TRACING LOST DOGS
-
If you find a German Shepherd puppy or adult dog, check in the right ear for a tattoo.
About 90% of German Shepherd puppies these days are being tattooed by the breeders.
-
The 3 letters start at the tip of the ear, and are followed by the 3 numbers (which are deeper into the dogs ear). It is very important you read each individual character, as they are necessary to identify the unique identification of the dog.
-
It may be necessary to clean the ear with a damp cloth, to ensure you are reading it correctly.
-
On occasions it may be easier to read the tattoo if any excessive hair on the inside of the ear is clipped away, or even very carefully shaved.
-
Once you have identified the tattoo, call the GSDCV Tattoo Registrar
(Michael on (03) 5248 1520), or Puppy Listings Service (Michelle on (03) 9449 5864), who have the records available to identify the Breeder, and hence the dog.

You may have heard about Les’s dog Shrek, an
eight-month-old puppy that went
missing-was finally recovered, and is now happily back home.
It was a marathon adventure for the little one, amid circumstances that any of
us might face, and in this case, resulted in a happy ending for a relieved
family.
How did it happen? After a walk with a family friend in a local park on the
evening of Thursday April 7, Shrek excitedly bounded off without his lead to
join some friends for a romp. After running about, he turned to rejoin his
walker, but was unable to find him. Deciding to make his own way home by daring
to cross an extremely busy road alone- he returned to the house, to find no one
about.
In an attempt to look for his family, he went off in another direction, crossing
another busy
road taking him further away from home. Finding himself lost, he frantically ran
up and down unfamiliar streets looking for something familiar. By this time,
tired and frightened, he wandered on- extremely thirsty. His registration tag-
proof of identity and ownership- was on the lead at the park when he ran off.
In the meantime, Shrek’s family frantic at his loss, put up posters, searched
and used the website to post details of a lost puppy, hoping that some one might
recognise and return him.
Fortunately Shrek had been tattooed by his breeder, and his identifying tattoo
was able to be noted on the posters and the website. This tattoo is absolute
proof of identity, that the puppy is Shrek.
What happened then? For the next few days Shrek wandered alone in unfamiliar
territory, there were hot days, followed by a rainy Sunday April 10th. Probably
early the following week, near St Kilda Junction, -several day after he went
missing- Shrek was chased, and caught by a man who took him home. It was now
four days since Shrek went missing.
After several days spent in an unfamiliar house with several children and
another dog- the finder left Shrek to go alone to go to the Lost Dogs Home in
North Melbourne on Thursday 14h April. The finder was told that the puppy was
reported missing by his owner and should be returned, while he said he was
wanted to keep Shrek.
The finder phoned Les (Shrek’s owner) on Friday 15th after getting owner details
from the Lost Dog’s Home- he told the Les that Shrek was not in good condition
when found, and had a bad eye condition. He expressed his interest in keeping
the puppy, declining a reward, and said he would call the following day,
Saturday 16th-but did not.
Eventually the police had to be called to assist in retrieving the puppy. They
called the finder to ask that he bring the puppy to the police station by Friday
22nd. Shrek was brought in on his new leash to the police station, where he
was ecstatic to recognise his Mum and Dad. The finder was genuinely fond of
Shrek who had got on well with his children, he had been concerned for his
welfare- still hoping to keep him, but realised where the puppy’s heart
is ... with his real family.
Shrek was missing for all of fifteen days. He now is happy at home where he
belongs- a carefree puppy enjoying his family’s’ loving attention.
We all express our relief and happiness that a lost puppy is back home with his
mum and dad.
