German Shepherd Collects for the Good Friday Appeal
Good Friday 29th March 2002 dawned, and the members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria Incorporated once again went to work, to collect money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The Western Branch coordinated this event as it has for the last 18 consecutive years, and again this year was ably assisted by a large contingent from the Northern and Eastern Branches.
The morning started with all members and their beautiful dogs rendezvousing at 8.00am at various intersections across the Western Suburbs, and beginning collecting from the public who travel down these roads.
The intersections that we have collected at over all these years include the off ramps of the Western Ring Road to Ballarat Road, the corner of Old Calder Park Highway & Keilor Park Road, the corner of Gordon Street & Ballarat Road, the corner of Moore Street & Ballarat Road, the corner of Epsom Road & Smithfield Road, and the corner of Racecourse Road & Boundary Road.
At 2:00pm the Club members and their dogs departed from their collection corners and met opposite the North Melbourne Swimming Pool for a welcome break and some lunch, and from there they formed up outside of the RMIT where they marched with their dogs along Swanston Walk to the Herald Sun Offices at South Bank.
At the Herald Sun Offices the members waited in anticipation as the contents of the cans was counted. Finally the result was announced. This year’s total was another tremendous result of $14,075.45 which brings the overall total for the 19 years to $149,528.75, a result which we are very pleased of, and proud to do our small part for such a worthy cause.
The dogs as always were a great attraction, with many people stopping to pat the dogs. We would like to thank all members and their dogs from the Western, Northern and Eastern Branches who participated, and gave up their time to collect for such a worthy cause.
This is an annual event, and in 2003 being the 20th anniversary, we are planning major effort to make it the biggest and best ever.
